Sounds
Latos drums have an exceptionally dry, thick, warm tone with exceptional fullness of sound, particularly in the low-mids. Above all, they are sensitive drums that respond as one: with manually-machined, solid brass hoops and lugs, the entire instrument "speaks" at all volume levels, creating a drum that feels... comfortable. Inviting. Inspiring.
This is all very much by design. Unlike in 1935, when a drum had a project through a 17 piece big band unamplified, most of our modern music making, and by extension, music making of the next hundred years, takes place under microphones. While the fullness of our Nickel Silver drums works wonderfully in acoustic contexts and its response allows out a surprising level of volume if called for, these drums are designed to translate under a microphone. Low tunings are fat, crunchy, and colorful, and sit in a mix concisely even without muffling. Mid tunings retain surprising low-mid depth and color. High tunings pop and speak quickly with neither choking nor abrasiveness.Of extreme utility the contemporary drummer, who is as likely to find themselves self-recording at their own home studio as they are working out of a commercial studio, Latos snares' inherent fullness and dry, sensitive character records easily, regardless of microphone selection and technique employed. Even at low tunings, muffling and thicker/pre-muffled heads become a creative option, not a necessity required to create a focused tone that sits well in a mix.
